Sales Management Leadership Skills Change Everything For The Better
I’ve greatly benefited from working in sales organizations with great sales management leaders. Executive leadership, as it relates to a sales team, is critical to that team’s sales success. Sales management leadership skills can be learned and developed.
When it comes to a sales team, sales managers must master the skills of leadership if they expect to generate breakthrough success. I urge you to make sales manager leadership skills and awareness a top priority.
I’ve also worked in sales organizations that were void of sales management leadership skills, except by the title they carried. Paranoid and untrustworthy individuals that “de-motivated” every sales team across the nation. These sales executives never made their numbers and never lasted very long. These sales executives and managers could have sure benefited from improving their sales management leadership skills. Let’s make sure that never happens to you. Here are a few tips on sales management leadership skills that can help you with your leadership in any sales organization.
Sales Management Leadership With Vision
Executive leadership is the process of generating followers and what they follow is the executive leader’s vision. So, the first step is to develop a clear vision of where you want to take your sales team. This vision is not about numbers but instead is about an identity. I’ve worked with one sales management leader that had a very simple vision. His vision was to “leave the competition in our dust and asking, who where those reps”. That simple, yet powerful vision worked, and worked well. Use a “war cry” and you’ll improve your sales management leadership skills.
Leadership Skills For Sales Managers
As a sales management leader, you also have to have a message on how your vision will be achieved. Once again, this doesn’t have to very detailed but it must contain some substance. What are the things that you want your sales team to be the best at doing each and every day in the field? Once you’ve answer that question, link it to your leadership vision and clearly announce your plan. Sales management leadership skills involve both a vision and a plan. Keep the plan general and trust that your sales reps will figure out the details for themselves. Your leadership skills point the way and your sales teams will figure out how to get there.
Sales Management Leadership Skills And The Trust Factor
If you don’t trust your salespeople, your salespeople will never trust you. As a sales executive leader, you must project confidence and believe in your salespeople. Sure there are times when it is necessary to terminate someone’s employment but you can’t fuel a sales organization on Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). Besides, the employee turnover will crush any opportunity for sales success. Showing true confidence in your people is at the heart of sales management leadership skills.
True Management leaders develop people. If you expect loyalty, you must deliver loyalty. Salespeople flourish when they know they belong to an organization that cares about them. In return, they’ll care about the organization. “We work as a team and no one is left behind”. Carry that motto and your sales management leadership skills will reach new heights.
Sales Management Leadership Skills And Motivation
Sales management leadership skills are not about motivation and I’m sure your first reaction to that statement is to disagree with it. Please think about it this way. Salespeople are unique employees. They already have a competitive spirit and that little thing called a Compensation Plan is motivating in itself. If you have to motivate a sales rep, your time is better spent finding a better sales rep. Management can “demotivate” but true motivation comes from within.
As a sales executive leader, focus on removing “de-motivating” factors. “You said these things weren’t working and holding you back… so we’ve fixed them.” Motivation in a sales organization will flourish on it’s own once “de-motivation” is removed. Yes, you must be a visible cheerleader but your sales reps expect their leader to be a problem solver. Solving problems is a big part of sales management leadership skills.
Sales management leadership skills have nothing to do with making friends. This is all about developing management leadership skills for employees to follow. Leadership and friendship are two different things.
Sales Management Leadership Skills And Sales Goals
Insure your sales reps understand that it’s not about achieving your goals. Sales Management Leadership is about helping reps to achieve their goals. Salespeople go to work to pay the bills, buy a new car or purchase a new home. Show them how to leverage the Compensation Plan to insure they achieve their goals. Achieving quota is important but a new car is quite a different story! Focus on their goals and you’ll be sure to achieve your sales goals.
Aside from compensation, salespeople need to be recognized for a job well done. Improve your sales management leadership skills by going out of your way to recognize all outstanding sales performances. Pick up the phone or write a letter thanking those sales rep for their contribution to the team.
Sales Management Leadership Skills Drive Success
Sales management leaders deliver the resources required for sales success. Doing so demonstrates they care.. and in return their sales teams care about them. A large part of this has to do with Employee Development. If you “ask” from your teams, you must also be in position to “give” to your teams. Apply this and improve your sales management leadership skills.
All armies teaches their members how to survive and the training never stops. As the leader of the sales ranks, you need the same attitude about training. Sales management leadership skills must focus on sales employee development. This isn’t an option. You must make professional sales training a requirement.
What tools have you delivered to help your sales team succeed? Working harder and increasing activity will do little to sustain an increase in overall sales performance. It will also do little for your sales management leadership leadership skills. Sales success has little to do with having the best product at the best price or sales activity for the sake of activity. The sales team equipped with the best sales skills will always take the number one spot. Someone in the sales leadership team must be in charge of delivering these skills. If not you, who? If not now, when?
