Advice On How To Get Promoted To Sales Manager
By, Nick Moreno

We do a lot of sales career training at the National Sales Center. The skills required to sell a product are the same skills you need to sell yourself to a company as an employee. Our sales career training programs give our clients a powerful advantage. In keeping with that spirit, let me offer you some advice on how to get promoted from sales rep to sales manager.

I’ve enjoyed many promotions during my sales career. My first promotion to a VP title was exciting but not as rewarding as my first promotion to a sales manager position. I mention that point whenever I’m asked about how to get promoted to sales manager. Let’s see what we can learn about being promoted to sales manager.

I was a top producer for Wang and was rewarded with their version of a President’s Club trip at the end of the year. I was in my mid twenties and the trip was to London. I had a great time but the trip was just the beginning. Upon my return, I received a promotion to Sales Manager.  Here is what I learned about how to get promoted to Sales Manager.

Promotions To Sales Manager

Top sales reps use great sales techniques but often they do not have the skills to be a top Sales Manager. When these reps get promoted to Sales Manager, the company loses a great rep and gains a poor Sales Manager. That said, only top producers get promoted to Sales Manager.  So rule number one is, produce. Demonstrate that you are a top sales rep and possess a solid work ethic. However, there are many other things that should be on your radar as you work on being promoted to sales manager.

Assume And Get Promoted To Sales Manager

This is delicate. If you want to get promoted to Sales Manager, never step on your manager’s toes but also assume you’ve already been promoted.  Establish yourself as a leader and volunteer for special projects. Mentor others about the sales process and circulate your best practices. Let others know about sales strategies that are working for you. During difficult times, assume the role of cheerleader. All these activities will help you get promoted to sales manager.

Get Along With Others And Get Promoted To Sales Manager

Although you are a top producer, you must stay humble if you expect to get promoted to Sales Manager. Give credit to all your sales resources and recognize their performances. Establish excellent relationships with other departments. Always remember that Sales is a team sport. Show appreciation often and you’ll be viewed as a candidate for promotion to Sales Manager.

Also establish excellent relationships with your customer base. Praises from customers are one more important tool in your quest to get promoted to Sales Manager.

Loyalty Is Important

Have you ever been involved in a “skip level” interview? This is when your boss’s boss interviews you. Never take advantage of these interviews and leverage them as an opportunity to bash your boss. That’s no way to get promoted to Sales Manager. No one wants a “boss basher” reporting to him or her. Instead, use these interviews to demonstrate your loyalty and creativity. Be honest about things that aren’t working but also offer potential solutions. Market yourself as someone that should be promoted to Sales Manager.

Develop Yourself To Be Promoted To Sales Manager

Key to a promotion to Sales Manager is to focus on self-development. Demonstrate that you are serious about your profession and serious about improving your skills. Get your hand on some solid sales training DVDs, books and CDs. Then, share your new sales strategies and prospecting skills with the rest of your team. This allows you to establish yourself as both a team leader and team player. Both qualities are very important if you want to get promoted to Sales Manager.
