I have some job interviewing tips for you that focus on how to best sell yourself to a hiring manager. This advice utilizes tips from salesmanship techniques because in a job interview you are selling something… you are selling yourself. Start off with a good resume and cover letter.

 

Salespeople know that they never get a second opportunity to create a great first impression. The same is true during a job interview. Park the stress while staying calm and confident. Get into the moment by saying to yourself “It’s Showtime” as you are about to be interviewed. This will set the stage for you just before the interview and put a smile on your face. Provide a firm handshake, look attentive and establish eye contact with the interviewer. These sales tips will help you when you are interviewing for a job.

 

Review with the interviewer your knowledge about the company, its products and competition in the marketplace. Ask questions about the job during the interview. Also uncover the type of person they are looking to hire. That information tells you how to present yourself during the interview. For example, if you are told they need someone with strong people skills tell them that your strong point is your people skills. During the job interview, provide examples on how you’ve used your people skills in your past. Remember this advice during your next job interview and you’ll be selling yourself like a top sales pro.

Sales reps are skilled at overcoming sales objections and they prepare for them. You need to do the same during your job interview. If you are not the perfect candidate for the job, be prepared to overcome that objection and explain why you should be hired. Explain how you learned skills quickly in your past. Remember, the hiring manager has a problem… they need to quickly hire someone. Let that manager know that you are the solution to their problem. You must accomplish this during your job interview.

 

Sales reps know how to close the sale. They ask for the order. You need to do the same during your job interview. End every job interview by asking to be hired. Let the interviewer know that you are ready and anxious to work for them.
