Where Are The Opportunities?
New and experienced workers are moving into green careers as the largest Economic Stimulus Package goes into effect. President Obama’s program is expected to create over 2 million green jobs from blue collar positions to white collar positions. Are you wondering how you can make the career move from your current job experience to a green job?
First we need to consider where the jobs are going to be. Designing and building renewable energy projects, solar, power generation, green battery production, window manufacturing, power distribution and alternative energy production are only a few areas of growth.
So, where is some of the money being spent?
- $6.6 billion for radioactive waste clean up.
- $5.5 billion has been assigned to improving energy efficiency in homes and buildings.
- $4.5 billion to upgrade the electrical power grid.
- $3.4 billion for the development of new coal and fossil-fuel technologies.
- $2.5 billion for the construction of energy generating facilities like wind, solar, and geothermal.
- $2 billion for alternative power for vehicle batteries.
- $410 million for energy research.
- As well as many other projects.
Breaking Into A New Industry
You might think it is very difficult to transfer your current experience into a green job. If you are currently unemployed or looking for a career that will sustain you for the next 5-20 years, you need to take a long term approach when considering a green job career as it relates the President Obama Stimulus Package. You need a green job specialty that will be applicable to the entire cross-section of projects. Realize that these projects will come and go as they get completed; so, you need to pick a niche that will make the most money and can be transferable from project to project. That career position is sales. All of these projects have that one thing in common, they need sales people to start them, market the products and continue to operate them.
How To Start Your Green Career
You need to first read and educate yourself on a particular green project to get started and then learn how to interview for a sales position. Each is rather easy to do. There is a tremendous amount of information out there on the internet of each type of green opportunity. A few days or weeks of study can get you up to speed. Learning how to interview for a sales position takes a little more expertise.
That is why the National Sales Center produced a DVD training course on how to sell. It is called The Progressive Sales Process. You have to present yourself in a different manner and have a sales strategy to land that position.
