An Unemployed Salesperson Can And Will Get Back On Track
It happens. Companies don’t expect sales to increase in the near future, so along with other departments, the Sales Department is reduced. Suddenly, you’re an unemployed sales rep. I have some advice for you that can help you to quickly back on track.
You already know about those Internet job search sites so there is no need for me to mention them here. I want to be more creative and supportive with my advice for the many unemployed salespeople around the country. My goal is not only to help you find a new job in sales but to also help you prepare for it.
You absolutely must keep the right attitude about everything during your job search period. I know this is easier said than done so let me offer you some solid advice.
A) Forget any disappointment you may have about your past employer. That was then and this is now. Unemployed salespeople need to be in the moment so put the past behind you.
B) Don’t take being unemployed personally. In this day in age, there is no shame associated with being unemployed. Keep your ego healthy and stay confident. Better days are just around the corner.
C) Don’t develop bad habits during your unemployment period. Maintain the same schedule for waking up and going to sleep. This will insure you are well prepared for your new job in sales.
D) I highly recommend exercise for unemployed sales reps. Salespeople are use to high activity so exercising is a must while you’re unemployed. Exercising is also a great way to reduce the stress associated with being unemployed.
F) Further develop your sales skills. This point is so difficult yet so very important for sales reps to comprehend. You may feel that your sales were down because of the economy or a long list of other factors and, you may be right. However, selling requires skills and there is no excuse for not furthering those skills during this unemployment period. Use this time to get some advanced sales training and prospecting training. Develop some new sales strategies that you can put to good use once you start working again.
Finding Your Next Sales Job
We both know that you’ll be back working soon. The good news for unemployed sales reps is that there is always a demand for solid salespeople. Let’s explore some creative job search strategies.
A) Networking is a powerful job search tool. Instead of hiding your unemployment, let the whole world know you are looking for work in sales. Insure all your friends and associates have a copy of your resume and encourage them to circulate it.
B) Expand your network by joining and using a social networking site for business people. Connect with as many individuals as possible and let them know you are an unemployed sales rep looking for a new job in sales. In fact, this information should be posted on your profile page.
C) Instead of reacting to job postings, get proactive and start selling yourself. You are a salesperson so you know how to do this. Send your resume to Sales Managers even if you are unaware of any openings. Stay aggressive and call those Sales Managers and sell them on all the reasons they should interview you.
Look, I get it. I know there is no joy in being an unemployed sales rep. However, I hope this advice will keep your spirits up and help you to land your next dream job.
My best to you with you job search!
Nick
