Salespeople Need To Control The Stress

At times, sales can be stressful. Our productivity is measured monthly, if not weekly so a few unproductive days could have a major impact on our overall numbers. Not only is there pressure to achieve our quota, but there is also pressure to achieve our forecasts and income goals. I thought it appropriate to discuss stress on salespeople and what we can do to manage it.

Stress not only affects your sales career but it can also affect your health. While I’m far from an expert in the subject of dealing with stress, I have been around salespeople for 30 years. Salespeople need to manage stress if they expect to have long successful careers. Too bad I’ve never seen stress management covered in any sales training programs. Stress in a sales job could kill or lead to bad habits that could kill. Stress in a sales job must be managed or… get out of sales.

At times, work stress and stress from home combine to create an overwhelming situation. This is not time for self medication as some foolishly think they can find in a few glasses of wine. Instead, this is a time to get professional help and don’t think there is anything wrong with it. In fact, if you see a fellow salesperson in this situation, advise them to get with a professional. We all need to look out for each other.

Salespeople should exercise and keep moving. Spend 15 minutes of your lunch break on a crisp walk. It will serve you well.

Stay positive and look for small victories. Stay motivated by picking up new sales skills and sales strategies. Sales training can help control the stress in a sales job.

Deep breathing is also very important to reduce the stress associated with a sales career. Get you body filled with clean fresh oxygen before every sales appointment. This will help you relax and clear your mind so you can focus on your prospect.

Prospects want to work with confident salespeople. That’s one more reason why it’s important for salespeople to control and manage their stress levels.

We are all trying to sell more in this difficult economy. Stay aware of your stress levels and take appropriate action when necessary.
