Searching For A First Job For College Graduate

Are you about to graduate from college and starting your job search? If so, I have a career option I want you to consider. I personally took this career path after graduating with a degree in history and never looked back. I tell more in this article about a first job for a college graduate.

Some people attend college to get educated in a career such as teaching, medical, legal etc, Others, like me, attended college to get educated about the world around us. There is nothing wrong with getting educated for the sake of being educated. In fact, there is a lot right with it but then reality hits. You have to find your first job after graduating from college and in this economy, that’s no easy task.

Desires For A First Job For A College Graduate

If you are anything like me, I wanted a job after graduating college that offered me the following,

  • A Great Income
  • Upward Career Mobility
  • Perks
  • Freedom
  • Career Stability

I was fortunate after graduating from college to stumble upon a job that fully met my criteria. I started a career in professional sales. Now please stay with me here because you should keep all options open and a career in sales may be right for you.

First, let’s clear up some misconceptions about being a professional sales rep. All that nonsense about personality, charisma, charm and the gift of gab is a lot of bologna. Sales is a great first job for a college graduate.

All you need to succeed in professional sales is “will” and “skill”. If, after graduating, you have the motivation to succeed, all you’ll need is to acquire top-notch sales skills. I’ll show you how to get those skills but first let’s look at how a career in sales addressed all the criteria I considered when I was searching for my first job after graduating from college.

Great First Job For A College Graduate

Unless you are in sales, your entry level compensation will primarily be based on a salary. A salary is nothing more than the least amount a company is willing to pay for fifty hours of your time each week. Professional salespeople receive both a salary and commissions. Thanks to those commissions, you get paid for what you produce. Isn’t that the kind of job you want after graduating from college?

Salespeople enjoy unlimited upward career mobility. I’m not just talking about Sales Manager, District Manager, Regional Manager or Senior Vice President of Sales. I’m talking about CEO! Many CEO’s got their start in the Sales Department.

Salespeople enjoy a ton of perks not afforded to employees in other departments. There is nothing better in business than fine dining clients on an expense account. Also, here is something that may interest you as look for a job after graduating. How about a company car or at least a car allowance? All these perks can’t be ignored.

I knew I didn’t want a job pushing paper after graduating. Salespeople enjoy the freedom of getting out of the office and setting their own schedule for appointments. Let others spend their day pushing paper. I wanted a better first job for this college graduate.

In addition, top salespeople will always be in demand and are often recruited by their competitors. That’s the kind of career stability you should be looking for in your first job after graduating from college. The key is to develop powerful selling techniques.

Selling is important work. Salespeople solve problems for businesses in their communities. They show companies how to save money and/or, how to be more productive. Your first job after graduating should be one that gives you a feeling of accomplishment.
