How To Write A Resume That Gets Seen

I assume if you are looking for a job, you have been sending out resumes to recruiters and companies. Unfortunately your resume and cover letters may never be seen. Blame it on technology. If you think someone is diligently looking through each resume for the ideal candidate to fill a specific position, you may be fooling yourself. Many recruiters and companies are now using scanning automated software systems to actually sift through the hundreds of resumes without a human ever touching one. Can you imagine if you had two openings, how many hours or days of your precious time would it take to read two hundred resumes and cover letters or more. Especially in today’s tough job market, the number of resumes received by companies can be a bit overwhelming; so now comes in automation to the rescue. When you email a resume and cover letters to a company or post it on their website, these systems are actually scanning for key words or phrases that match the job description they are trying to fill. As a result, your resume could be totally overlooked if you are not doing a couple things to fix this problem.

Changes You Need To Make

Before you send in your resume for a specific job, make sure it is a good fit. Read thoroughly the job description and qualifications. Be sure that there are many applicants that have done the exact work or similar work they are specifically looking for. If your background does not match the open position very closely, you might be wasting time you can be spending on other job search activities like networking! After you read the requirements in the description section of a job opening, make sure you include the same key phrases or words in your resume and cover letters that were used in the job posting. Unfortunately, this means you will have to modify each cover letter and resume for each job application. When you include these key words or phrases in your cover letter or resume, the probability that a computer might single out your resume increases dramatically; otherwise it might end up in the dead data file.

Another sneaky trick to use on these automated computers is to include more descriptive key phrases and key words in your cover letter and resume at the very bottom of the page after your signature. This time use the font color white instead of black. While the naked eye can’t see these words or phrases, the computer can and it might trigger an acceptance of your resume. Don’t worry, even if the cover letter or resume is printed out, it will never show up. There are always means to fool the system and get recognized.
