Do You Have What It Takes To Succeed In Sales?

As a sales trainer, I’m often asked about what it takes to succeed in sales. On the surface, the question makes it appear that there is one special thing that allows people to succeed in sales. Well, it’s just not that simple but one thing always comes to mind. I have some advice for you but first, let’s look at what it doesn’t take to succeed in sales.

What It Doesn’t Take To Succeed In Sales

Products and services that are easy to sell pay a low commission. The harder it is to sell something, the larger the commission. It doesn’t take the best product at the lowest price to succeed in sales. It takes skills to succeed in sales.

It doesn’t take a bubbly personality to succeed in sales. You don’t have to be a “people person” to succeed in sales. It doesn’t take a special personality, charisma or the gift of gab to succeed it sales. It takes powerful selling skills to succeed in sales.

It Takes Desire To Succeed In Sales

If I had to point to one thing, desire is what it takes to succeed in sales. You need the desire to work hard and set challenging goals. You need the desire to learn all about your product, industry and your company’s procedures. You need the desire to learn powerful sales strategies. You need the desire to master sales skills. That’s what it takes to succeed in sales. The only focus is to increase sales.

Too many salespeople only give lip service to their desire to succeed in sales. It takes a career long commitment to excellence if you expect to succeed in sales. Too few are willing to pay the price that commitment demands. It’s like they want to succeed in sales, but not that badly. Instead, they look for shortcuts and hope to get lucky. That’s not what it takes to succeed in sales.

I only work with those that have the desire to become Sales Superstars and close more sales. They know what it takes to succeed in sales and they are willing to pay the price. They know that earning six figures was never meant to be easy. If it were, everyone would be earning six figures.

When I’m asked what it takes to succeed in sales, I respond with a question. “How badly do you want it?” Don’t tell me you want to succeed in sales if you are not willing to pay the price. You don’t want it that badly if your prospecting needs to improve but you are doing nothing to improve your cold calling techniques.

I ask them about the last time they’ve invested in their careers and got some sales training. I’m talking about sales training that they paid for, not sales training supplied by their employer. Some say “never”. I tell them they’ll never succeed in sales unless they are willing to invest in themselves because that’s what it takes to succeed in sales. This is key sales advice. Now go get a sales training CD and take your sales success to the next level.
