Get Your Sales Message On Target

What do you want the world to know about your company? How you describe yourself is your sales message and that message can be found in advertising tag lines, mission statements and even elevator pitches. A solid sales message can be a powerful sales tool but far too many sales messages are just a lot of hot air.

Many sales messages talk about customers. They may say the customer comes first or some other positive aspect of client relations. It sounds good but it means nothing. So, your customer comes first, prove it! What comes in second? I don’t think too many people justify a purchasing decision because some company told them that their customers come first. It sounds like a lot of empty words to me.

I appreciate the challenge in developing a sales message that hits its target. The sales message must be short and memorable. Companies pay big money for a powerful sales message but I often wonder how some of them got approved. Some executive jumps up and says, “Lets tell the world our customers come first”! Imagine paying someone for that line of nonsense?

Some go for cleverness in their sales message. Clever sales messages are often a play on words or contain words that rhyme. While clever is good for a company’s image, these clever sales messages still need to motivate someone to buy something.  That’s my sales tip about sales messages.

We have a sales message at the National Sales Center. Our message is that we are “The Place For Serious Sales Professionals”. I feel only reps that are serious about selling value sales training. I do my best not to fall in love with our sales message because I’m sure it can be improved. Perhaps “Serious Sales Training For Serious Sales Pros” may be better but I’m not sure.

No one ever said this was easy. Hum, what about “We Make Selling Easy”? No, that’s just another hot air sales message. Besides, selling is never easy. If it was, reps would not get paid big commissions and I’d be out of work.

Perhaps I’ll come up with something better during my afternoon walk on the beach.

Wish me luck!

Nick
