In this economy, discovering new ways to improve sales is on the mind of every sales rep. The stakes are high and careers are on the line if sales don’t improve. Unfortunately, the search for new ways to improve sales has caused too many to overlook the basics. You can’t build a strong house on a weak foundation.That’s why I wrote this article on how to improve sales.

The first step to improve sales involves the understanding of why someone needs or would desire your product or service. For example, can they save money or become more productive? If you expect to improve sales, begin by knowing the benefits customers gain by using your product or service.

Improve sales by then identifying potential suspects that may benefit from using your product. Some members of this target audience may have a need for your product while others may not. Your job is to separate one from the other but just how is that accomplished?

Develop a powerful list of questions that will identify a need for your product or service. This list is critical if you expect to improve sales. For example, if I were selling sales training, I may ask the following questions…

• How would you compare your sales productivity to your sales goals?
• How would you benefit from a 20% improvement in sales?
• Tell me about the steps you are taking to improve sales?
• What are the consequences if sales don’t improve?

How would such questions improve sales? First, they identify needs. Second, none of the questions can be answered with a “yes” or “no” because you want your prospect talking. Third, they focus on benefits and not the product. Please notice that not once did I mention sales training. Focusing on needs and benefits is how you begin to improve sales.
