Best Sales Jobs For A New College Graduate

Why do I think a job in sales is perfect for a new college graduate? Well, that’s exactly where I took my career when I graduated and I never looked back.

It’s one thing for a college graduate to want a job in sales and quite another thing for a recent college graduate to actually get hired in a sales job. I what to cover it all in this post about college graduates and a job in sales.

College graduates are often handicapped with debt so income is important. In a sales job, you get paid a salary as well as commissions based on your productivity. All others get paid the least amount a company is willing to offer. I think that says it all about this point and sales positions for college graduates!

Are you a college graduate looking for a career with upward mobility? Most CEOs began their careers in the sales organization. Score another point for reasons college graduates should consider a career in sales.

Where can a recent college graduate find a job in sales? I’d stay focused on Fortune 1000 companies that offer a salary, commissions, benefits and paid expenses. Now that a great compensation package that may also include a company car!

Here are a few industries that a college graduate may want to consider when looking for a job in sales in this economy.

  • High Technology
  • Telecommunications
  • Financial Services
  • Health Care
  • Internet Services

You may be wondering if you are a college graduate with the right personality for a career in sales. My advice to recent college graduates on that topic is to please park your concerns. Salespeople come in all types of personalities. Forget the comic book stereotype depicted in the movies and television. You don’t need an overly outgoing personality or the gift of gab. However, you do need a healthy amount of ambition and you also need to know how to sell. In fact, you’ll need some sales skills to get hired because more often than not, you’ll need to pass some kind of sales assessment test as well as the interview.

Now let’s cover the most important part of this discussion. How can a recent college graduate get hired in a sales job? I already hinted at the answer. You’ll need to have some knowledge of the sales process if you expect to get through the interviews. This will help you stand out from all the other college graduates anxious to get hired for the same sales position.

Look at it this way. You are a college graduate interviewing for a sales position. During the interview you mention a few things like…

  • Building rapport with prospects
  • Pre sales appointment planning
  • Closing skills
  • Open ended probing questions
  • Cost justifications
  • Overcoming objections

The above are music to the interviewer’s ears.

There is another college graduate interviewing for the same sales job. That college graduate knows nothing about sales and is simply “wigging it” during the interview. Which college graduate do you think will get hired for that job in sales? Let that college graduate be you!

I urge college graduates looking for a sales job to get some sales training before they start interviewing. The sales training may be found on CDs or DVDs and should cost around one hundred dollars. That’s a small price for even the most cash poor college graduate to pay for a career in sales with a six-figure potential.

To all the college graduates looking for a job in sales… I wish you the best of success!
