The sales process is the communications process that creates clients. Learning the sales process is a basic sales skill but learning how to master the sales process requires advanced sales training. Frankly, you can’t earn a living in sales without understanding the sales process. It doesn’t matter if you are in retail sales, wholesale sales, B2B sales, product sales or selling a service. You need to know the sales process and use the sales process every time you are with a sales prospect.
Steps In The Sales Process
The sales process is made up of a series of well defines steps. The steps in the sales process must be followed in a very structured order. If you want to succeed in sales, you can’t move to the next step in the sales process until the step you are on is successfully completed. If you do, the probability of closing the sale is greatly diminished.
I’ve seen too many salespeople look for shortcuts in their execution of the sales process. This is why so many experienced salespeople, from time to time, find themselves in a sales slump. To get past their sales slump, experienced salespeople need to forget the shortcuts and get back to strict adherence to every step in the sales process and to execute those steps with the selling skills of the top sales pros.
Sales Process Training
Too many salespeople think they know the sales process. But, knowing the process is not enough. You also have to implement the sales process on every sales appointment. Only advanced sales training provides salespeople with the sales techniques and sales skills required to implement the sales process like a top sales professional. The number of steps in the sales process is open to debate. It can range from five steps to nine steps in the sales process. It’s not that some sales training programs omit steps in the sales process. Instead, they combined steps in the sales process. I don’t combine steps in my sales training. I feel that’s an easy way for salespeople to forget where they are and where they are going in the sales process with a prospect. That’s why I use a nine-step process in my sales process training program.

Studying the sales process leaves many experienced sales reps thinking that’s basic sales training and they are above it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Studying the sales process, even for the most experiences reps, could be a “money making” refresher, but it goes further, much further than that when it comes to this type of sales process training.
