SALES TRAINING TIPS AND ADVICE FOR NEW SALES REPS

By Nick Moreno, National Sales Center, Sales Trainer

I get great enjoyment showing seasoned salespeople advanced sales strategies in my “Superstar” sales training programs. But I also get a charge out of working with positive minded salespeople that are are launching a new career. New sales reps are so very excited about their new careers and they are so eager to learn the principles of professional salesmanship. I love it and it serves to motivates me. So, I have some advice for new salespeople.

My mission is to keep their head in the game with exciting sales training programs. I know selling is difficult especially when you are a new sales rep and just starting to acquire the sales skills you need to succeed. My goal, as a sales trainer, is to insure these new salespeople don’t get frustrated and prematurely leave their sales careers behind. So, here are a few of my best sales training tips and advice for new salespeople.

1) Use Your Ears More Than Your Lips – Strategic Advice For New Sales Reps
Too many inexperienced salespeople think they need to always be talking and nothing is further from the truth. Forget about talking so much and start listening to every word and message your prospect is supplying. Be prepared to ask probing questions that dig deep to uncover problems your prospect is experiencing and how your prospect will benefit from solving those problems with your offering. When you focus on uncovering problems and presenting cost justified solutions… you’re selling! But, the only way to find those problems is by listening and you develop that skill with experience and a professional sales training program. This is important advice for new sales reps.

2) Never Make Price The Issue
Key Advice For New Sales Reps
Here is some more important advice for new sales reps.Having the best price will not guarantee sales success. Would you buy the least expensive cut of fish or the least expensive shoes to go on a hike? Likewise, having the higher price is no guarantee of sales failure… in fact, far from it. Yes, your price needs to be competitive and your prospect’s funds need to be qualified but aside from those things, price is just a number. Remember this piece of advice for new sales reps and start your career on the right foot.

The key is to not focus on price and start focusing on the value of your product. Any thing can, and often is, made cost less. A product’s special value is when it is manufactured better and has the benefits your prospect desperately needs. I’m not going to tell you it’s easy to present a product in these terms because it’s not easy. However, you’ll get these sales skills in a professional sales training program. My advice for new sales reps… get sales training fast and often.

3) Never Expect To Win An Argument And Close The Sale
My Advice For New Sales Reps
I have critical advice for new sales reps. Debating your sales prospect is never smart so avoid debates when you first you hear a sales objection. Your sales prospect is not rejecting you or your offering, so don’t take it personally. Your prospect simply has a question, a concern or fails to understanding you said. No big deal! Winning the argument and failing to close the sale is a sure fire way to earn pitiful commission checks. Stop arguing and start communicating new information so your prospect will come to a new opinion concerning your offering. This sales skill is called “salesmanship” and I urge you to get this skill in a professional sales training program.

4) Forget Qualifying And Start Disqualifying Your Prospects
The problem with qualifying prospects is that it soon becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. Solid prospects are precious so inexperienced salespeople find it easy to overlook all the red flags. However, your time is also precious and you can’t spend it with people that can’t or will not buy from you. As hard as it is, look for reasons to disqualify your prospects. Take an honest assessment of the probability you’ll close the sale. If you don’t think you’ll ever get the business, move on and find a better opportunity. I know it’s not easy but you can acquire that sales skill in a top notch sales training program.

5) Get Some Sales Training
Very Important Advice For New Sales Reps
Selling requires skills and no matter what you may have previously thought, there is no such thing as a natural salesperson. You become a successful salesperson when you acquire the sales skills and sales strategies required for success. Invest some time and money in your professional sales career. Think of it this way. A few hundred dollars in the Stock Market may give a nice return on your investment but nothing like the money making sales skills you’ll use for life.
